“Do you like the gold foil? Maybe it looks too much like a wedding invitation. Everyone will open it, get excited, read it, and then feel let down when it’s just a party.”

“Subtle, Mom. I seriously doubt everyone is waiting by their mailbox for a wedding invitation from me,” Veronica said. “If you like the gold, do the gold.”

“No,” her mom said. “The black print is more professional anyway. We’ll go with the black to announce your new partnership with the firm.”

Veronica’s parents insisted on throwing a party when she made partner. She wanted to tell them to buy a few balloons and a cake and call it good, but that wasn’t her mom’s style. She’d want a catered event with fancy invitations and speeches. And that would require a sit-down meeting at their kitchen table. She was their only child. What could she do other than be gracious about it? Nothing. She could do nothing. She loved her parents, so whatever her mom wanted, she’d get.

Veronica looked at her watch and then at her dad, who had left this little planning party an hour ago and was watching the sports channel with a beer in his hand. He looked back at her and winked, then chuckled to himself.

Her dad wouldn’t plan the party, but he’d picked out whatever piece of jewelry they’d give her. That was his thing, giving Veronica a necklace or bracelet when she hit a new milestone. She still had all of them, even the tiny bracelet he gave her when she’d graduated from kindergarten.

She felt a wave of sadness come over her as she thought about watching her parents get older and eventually losing them like Charlotte had. She’d be lost without them. They were always there for her, through the ups and downs of her life, her schooling, her career. She reached over and grabbed her mom’s hand. “Thank you, for wanting to do this for me. I have the best parents.”

Her mom gave her hand a pat. “We have the best daughter.”

The doorbell rang. Her dad got up. “Expecting company?”

“No,” Veronica and her mom answered in unison.

A moment later, Bea came into the kitchen. She was out of breath and looked as if she’d seen a ghost. Veronica stood. “Bea? What are you doing here?”

“I’m sorry for interrupting, but I didn’t think this could wait.”

Veronica’s mom stood. “What’s wrong, Bea? You’re scaring me.”

“I was cc’d on an interoffice email. I don’t think I was supposed to see it. They must have cc’d the wrong person. Anyway.” Bea wrung her hands together. “I had to tell you in person, V.”

“Okay, you’re killing us here, Bea. Just tell me what the email said.”

Bea hesitated for a moment. “I hate being the one to tell you.”

“Bea!”

Bea jumped at the loud request. “Okay! Sorry, I just can’t believe this is happening, but it looks like they’re making Avery a partner. Not you.”

Veronica was stunned. She looked at her dad, who was standing behind Bea, then at her mom.
