“So let me get this straight,” Dale said as one might after learning of some vile rumor his or her name had been attached to. “You have people buried in your little town with stakes through their hearts.”

“That’s where you go?” Tony all but shouted over the phone.

“After all that, that’s where you go?”

“That’s exactly where I go! My God, I can’t wait to visit this town, but I know already I’ll need garlic and wolfbane and rosaries and wild roses—I’ve never heard the beat!”

“It’s an unusual little town.” Gregg joined in. We’ve definitely got a story or two to tell.

“Well,” Tony eased back in, “Let’s get back to the story at hand. So you have all these suspects. Dale just filled up another page.”

“Gregg!” Dale called out.

“Yes, sir!”

“I’m going back a bit here, but you said that Officer Southards saw footprints outside that nobody seemed to want to talk about. Is that right?”

“It is. He said they all acted like it was nothing, acted like they’d seen them already, sent him on his way, but to this day he believes it was an integral part of the evidence that was completely overlooked. In fact, he went back.”

“Went back?”

“Went back that night, he and his partner.”

“Do tell my friend.” Tony comically demanded, stretching, like warm taffy, the word “teeellllll” to its snapping point.
