Chapter 11
X marks the spot in Downview. I searched it up on Google maps at school. If them drones could drop photos as well as phones and smack and spice, theyâd know that. All them prison buildings is made like Xs and I donât know if itâs because thatâs where they buried the treasure or if theyâre making kisses on the ground for planes to see.
It takes three hours to get there on account of the M25 and all them other road miles but that donât mean they give you more than an hour for your visit. It donât make no difference to them if you walked there because you live down the same endz or if you came all the way from the next-along-next-along county.
Same hour. Same sixty minutes. Same three thousand six hundred seconds.
âIâm getting a job,â I tell mum. âDown the canal. Going to work on boats.â
Mum donât say nothing. Iâve started thinking she donât want to be out. I understand. They make it nice here. Not nice-nice, but at least you donât have to think about nothing, plan nothing, lose nothing; ainât no meter to feed and the foodâs free. I know she works in there, and sheâs always learning some new thing. They got a nice library and all, but itâs not the same as outside.
Outside is hard. I feel her slipping away in the kind of nice they give here and I canât reach her. I donât know if Iâm enough to make outside the place sheâd rather be.
âMe and youâs going to be okay,â I say.
She donât say nothing because sheâs watching the TV they put on in there for little kids.
âIâm going to look after you.â
I hold her hand.
âI ainât a kid no more,â I say.
Maybe that was a squeeze. I ainât sure.
âCome September â¦â I say.
She looks at me like she ainât never been more sorrier and I want to tell her she donât need to be. Itâs cool, because when Iâm sixteen, they canât tell us shit no more.
âPlease, mum,â I say, but it donât make no difference if getting here takes three hours or five little minutes. You ainât going make nobody talk if they donât want to.
âYou know youâre living in a massive X?â I say. âYou can see Downview from space. Serious! International Space Station people wave at you every hour when they go by. They go, âHi, Mrs Samson! Nice weather weâre having,â except weatherâs always nice in space, innit.â
I get the littlest smile but thatâs okay. Iâll take that.
âNo shit. Google it up, mum. Next time you do IT and the teacher ainât looking, search it up. You only canât see the X because youâre living in it. You got to look at the big picture. It ainât all here. This ainât all it is. Thereâs more, you know.â
Andrew yells at me from the other side of the lock gate. I ainât done nothing wrong, itâs only that the waterâs bare loud.
âHarder, lad. Give it
