I imagine how I must have looked to everyone who saw me today walking along the side of the road, a bandage covering the whole right side of my face, a mean limp and a scar.
Guess I wouldn’t have stopped either.
The thought brings me back to the reason I’m running in the first place. Not many people have seen his face and the ones that have aren’t here to tell you about it. Maybe that’s the greatest mystery of it all—at any time he could be anywhere. It’s almost as if he’s a ghost.
Vivica and I had stumbled onto him at separate points in our lives: she was a struggling student, stripping to pay her bills and I was just an area thug. There wasn’t much we wouldn’t do for money and at first, the idea of selling people to their ultimate doom sounded crazy, but the more we thought about it, it started to sound like an opportunity to build a better life. Plus, get rid of some enemies on the way.
Our cut was always $10,000 apiece—the dirtier, the better. He’d told us that he only wanted people who hurt people, but after a while anyone would do.
We became dependent on the money, and why wouldn’t we when all we had to do was make one phone call? Of course we heard the stories and saw their faces on the news as their relatives searched for them. We never asked any questions and he never gave us any answers. Not even his name.
Taking my shoes off first, I strip down to my boxers and lay down on the hard mattress. Night is the hardest part for me. Lying awake wondering when it’ll be my time to pay for the sins I’ve committed against those people for my own selfish gain.
Tonight would be another sleepless night. Sort of like the ones I was used to having alone there in the attic. Whatever Vivica had done to me, she did it with much rejoicing.
“No one will ever fall for that pretty face of yours again,” she would say.
She didn’t want to kill me. In fact, she called herself teaching me a lesson; I’d known that the moment she’d walked into the room on Cayne and I there would be problems, but I had no idea what I was in store for.
Thinking about it this way makes me even angrier. I should have ran the knife across her throat; but still, that was too quick for her.
I roll over to my side, forcing myself to push the thoughts away. They won’t help me now. Seeing the remote control laying on the dresser and pick it up and turn the television on.
“Tonight, local police are looking for a woman taken from her hospital bed…”
At first I stare blankly at the story—looking but not seeing what is really going on.
“Vivica Laurel, a respected psychologist in the Houston area, was being treated at Memorial Herman after obtaining a stab wound to her abdomen. Authorities say Ms.
