EPILOGUE

It had been a month since the frightening collapse of the mine shaft in the foothills of the Rockies, but the townspeople were still buzzing about the heroic efforts of Dr. Garrison and the quick skills of Elizabeth. The day after the men had cleared out of the house, Jack and Elizabeth went to the courthouse to exchange vows and make it official. They became Dr. and Mrs. Garrison exactly one week from the time she arrived at the house.

The newly formed Denver Post ran a cover story on Dr. Garrison and his practice, and the mining wives held a banquet in the doctor’s honor. There was a special ceremony to go with the dinner, but even Kate didn’t spill any of the details to Elizabeth beforehand. Elizabeth knew something was going on, and the mystery surrounding the banquet was making her desperate for answers.

“Oh Kate, the suspense is killing me! Please give me an idea of what you are doing tonight for Jack,” Elizabeth pleaded with her friend. Kate wasn’t saying anything though, and enjoyed seeing her friend squirm.

“My dear friend, you will find out soon enough!” Kate responded coyly.

Finally it was time to serve up. Jack conversed with the miners, many of whom he had rescued and taken care of without a moment’s hesitation. Jack confided to Elizabeth that he felt a little embarrassed over the attention earlier that night.

“Yes, dear, but these men see you for the hero that you are!” she had complimented him.

Now, it was the time in the banquet when Jack was called up to the podium. As he stood there, he listened to Kate and Stephen share the news they had been keeping from everyone.

“It is with our great honor to present you, Dr. Garrison, with donations needed to clean up the old hospital in town. After you so heroically sprang into action to save our husbands, it was the least we could do. We hope you will be pleased with your new hospital, where you can build the future of your practice.

Jack was speechless at the generosity of the townspeople and thanked each and every one of them. Elizabeth beamed with pride, and knew that Jack’s destiny as a doctor had been fulfilled, for his sake, and the sake of the growing city.
