Chapter Seven

“No.” Their gaze swiveled to Vasquez, “We haven’t come this far just to give up. We’ll find a way past the soldiers and keep heading in. We must be going in the right direction. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have posted soldiers to guard the approaches. We go on. Mang is with us, and there’s still a chance he’ll recognize something and be able to guide us in.”

“I still say we’re wasting our time.”

Farrell got to his feet. “And I say we don’t. As long as I’m in charge, we keep going. We’ll cut east through the jungle. Move out.”

He led the way into the jungle, away from the North Vietnamese, pushing along a narrow game trail. Vasquez was close behind, with Dave Ashe, Brad, and Mang keeping up. A few minutes later, he realized Melvin and Bo hadn’t come along. He held up a hand for them to stop.

“Where are the others? Have you seen Dorsey and Baker?”

Ashe shrugged. “Come to think of it, I haven’t seen them since we pulled off the track to avoid the North Vietnamese. Wait, Melvin was doing something with his pack. I think he brought along some of the explosives from the Toyota.”

“What the hell for?”

“Beats me. I guess he must’ve had something in mind.”

“Wait here. I’m going back.”

He retraced his steps, and when he reached the start point, they were nowhere in sight. He looked to the south, there was no other route they could’ve taken, but he saw nothing. He swiveled his gaze around to the north, and he dropped flat to look through the gap in the foliage to check on the soldiers. He couldn’t believe what was happening.

A cacophony of explosions and automatic rifle fire caused flocks of birds to take flight in terror. The soldiers were grabbing their guns and scattering, and two men were charging toward them. Melvin paused, armed a grenade, and tossed it overarm in a mighty throw that would’ve done credit to a baseball league pitcher. The grenade exploded, men went down screaming, and they charged on, firing from the hip. The Viets never stood a chance, and the two Phoenix operators charged into their center, switching to burst mode and finishing off any survivors. He heard Bo Baker whooping in glee as he chased a fugitive into a clump of trees, and a moment later the sound of more firing. He emerged, covered in blood, grinning from ear to ear.

“Motherfucker, he put a bullet in me. I promise you it’s the last time he’ll put a bullet in anybody, not after I treated him to a tasty lead surprise, courtesy of Uncle Bo.

He saw Farrell emerged, and he was grinning as he took out his huge combat knife. “About time you showed up. A pity it’s too late, like always.”

He waved the knife at his face, and he thought he was about to plunge it into his chest, but Bo used it to dig into the top part of his leg, using the point of the blade to lever out a round that’d embedded in his flesh.
