Chapter 15

CARLOTTA PARKED the Miata in the lot for the county morgue. She flashed back in her mind to the first time she’d visited the building with Hannah and Jolie Goodman to identify a body. She remembered wondering how anyone could work at such a morbid place. Now two of the men she loved most worked there, and she knew her way around the place pretty well.

She checked in at the front desk. “Dr. Craft is expecting me.”

The receptionist consulted a schedule. “Dr. Craft is in the lab on the fourth floor. I’ll let him know you’re on your way.”

Carlotta walked to the elevator, feeling antsy about what she was about to ask Coop to do. But in this case, she rationalized, the end justified the means. On the other hand, keeping him in the dark about what he actually would be doing was probably best to protect him professionally.

When she stepped off the elevator, she was pleased to see Wes dressed in a white lab coat pushing a cart of supplies.

“Hi, stranger. I haven’t seen much of you lately.”

His smile was uncharacteristic. “Hi, Sis. You here to see Coop?”

She held up some travel brochures. “We’re planning our honeymoon. But I was hoping to run into you. Mom told me you had a good day in court yesterday.”

He pulled up his pant leg and grinned. “Got rid of the bracelet.”

“That’s great. And I hear you’re going to take the college entrance exam?”

Wes blushed. “Yeah, I have to take it in a couple of weeks in order to apply for the fall term.”

“That’s quick, will you have time to prepare?”

“I’m studying every spare minute at the golf center and when I have downtime here. And Dad bought me a sweet computer setup, I’ll pick it up tomorrow.”

She took in the young man before her, marveling that not long ago she was worried he wouldn’t make it to adulthood. “I’m so proud of you.” She leaned forward to give him a hug and for once, he didn’t object. Before she got too misty, she released him. “How is Meg?”

Wes shrugged. “Getting better, I think. I, um… haven’t talked to her for a while. I’ve been so busy.”

She could tell there was more to the story, but she knew better than to press.

“I should get back to work,” he said, nodding to the cart. “See you at home.”

Home. The word hit her hard as she turned toward the lab. Since their parents had left, home for her and Wes had been the townhouse, and while she assumed she’d move into Coop’s industrial condo, she hadn’t considered how much the move would affect her and Wes. For so long it had been just the two of them…

What was it Hannah had said? That everything was changing.

“Brides-to-be are supposed to be happy,” Coop chided.

She looked up to see him standing in the doorway. She smiled. “I am, silly, just deep in thought.”

“About?”

“Am I moving into your place after the wedding?”

He blinked. “Of course. My home is your home.
