LUCAS, GEORGE (1944–)

It is a rare feat in Hollywood for a film to be considered both a critical and commercial success, as the inclusion in one category usually excludes it from the other. Films that receive critical praise and are lauded as cinematic masterpieces are often overlooked by the general public. Conversely, films that perform well at the box office are commonly conceived to dazzle audiences with spectacle or star power rather than substance. But of the comparatively few films that have managed to be both spectacularly successful financially and also critically respected, few if any have cast a shadow over popular culture as long that of George Lucas’s Star Wars (1977), which has resulted in making Lucas one of the most influential filmmakers of all time.

Born into a middle-class family in Modesto, California, on May 14, 1944, George Walton Lucas Jr. grew up during the golden age of television when cartoons and serialized television programs dominated the airwaves for children. His early exposure to television would have a profound impact on his contribution to the film industry, as would the love of cars he would develop as a teenager. Originally interested in photography, Lucas’s passion quickly evolved into filmmaking, and he would spend much of the 1960s enrolled in the undergraduate and graduate film programs at the University of Southern California (USC). There he wrote, produced, and directed THX 1138 (1971) a highly acclaimed student film that would eventually help launch his career as a filmmaker.
