She chose Rats—325–500 grams, hit Play, and leaned forward to watch.

Four or five were grooming and milling about in a large laboratory cage. At the bottom of the frame a digital clock ticked off the seconds.

At 00:00:06 the creatures became agitated. They darted around the cage, back and forth, crawling over one another. Some tossed their heads, shaking them from side to side. One or two rose on their hind legs, baring their teeth, then falling, then rising, then falling again. Soon, they had all dropped to their sides—their bodies jerking, their feet kicking. One opened its mouth and bit into its own belly, ripping out chunks of white fur, then bloody tissue. Others followed, their pink and black snouts becoming red in blood and flesh—intestines stringing from their mouths, hanging between gnashing teeth … until they slowed to a stop. Except for an occasional twitch, there was no more movement. The cage was filled with only fur and blood and lifeless carcasses.

She glanced to the digital display. To her surprise it read only:
