Chapter Six

Goldie and Jett were mucking about in the practice room when Goldie’s phone vibrated. Jett shot Goldie an annoyed look. He hated when calls or texts distracted Goldie from their time together, calling the phone Goldie’s “electronic leash.”

Leash or not, Goldie never wanted to miss an important call. Goldie picked up the phone to see Grace’s name and face in the window. His stomach flipped. She never called unless there was a problem.

“Everything okay, Grace?”

“No, sir.”

Goldie waited for Grace to continue, but either she was trying to find the right words or expected more prompting. “What’s wrong?”

“The police, sir. They arrested Cole.”

“Arrested Cole? What for? What happened?” Cole was his father’s son, but even Jett could get to a clinic and back without being arrested.

“For assault, sir. Among other things.”

“Oh, God.” What did Cole do? Was he upset by the test? Did he have to wait too long in

the waiting room? Is he just crazy? “What happened?”

“Nothing happened, sir. We came out of the clinic, and the media was waiting

with the police. They arrested him for assault and unsafe lane changes.”

Unsafe lane changes? “Did you let him drive?”

“No, sir. These were charges from the visit to Kmart.”

“Oh, Christ.” Goldie turned to see Jett staring at him. He covered the receiver with one hand. “Cole’s been arrested for what happened at Kmart.” “Those fuckers!” Jett looked around like he might break something, then pulled it together. He made for the landline extension by the practice room bar and plugged it in; God forbid someone try to communicate with Jett when he didn’t want to be reached.

As he dialed, he looked at Goldie. “Calling Sarah. No way are those shit-sucking fame whores keeping my son in jail over some bullshit, trumped-up charges. Stupid sons of bitches messing with my boy, goddamn.”

Jett’s claiming and possessiveness were shocking enough. That he thought to call Sarah made Goldie wonder if he’d slid into an alternate dimension. Usually it was Goldie making those calls.

Then again, it was usually Jett in jail, often for assaulting paparazzi. If Goldie had to bet, it was a pap pressing charges against Cole, too. A free press was one thing. People taking pictures was annoying but par for the course. However, some photographers deliberately provoked celebrities in hopes of gaining an easy settlement.

Goldie returned to his conversation as Jett made arrangements on the other line. “Do they know who Cole is?”

Grace sighed. “They know who he looks like and that we went to a paternity clinic. I thought I shook the tail when we left.” So there was extra surveillance since yesterday’s debacle. Maybe even police. Goldie blushed as he remembered how they’d spent the morning on the balcony.

Dear Lord.

Not that anyone could approach the house from that angle, but an enterprising photographer with a telescopic lens could have made a fortune.

Goldie refocused. “All right. Jett’s on the phone with Sarah. They’re making a plan. Did you check on Robbie? Is there anyone after him?”

Grace cleared her throat. “Robbie is a professional, sir.
