TRACY

Being the wife of arguably the most insane captain aboard the ship could at times be infuriating, and with little comfort, as not many people wanted to be associated with her for just that reason. But in this case, it was working out decently. Master Sergeant Wassau had found her, the rest of the family, and their menagerie of animals a corner to call all their own in an otherwise packed house.

“Do you think we’re radioactive?” Travis asked. He was sitting on the edge of a table. His girlfriend was sitting on the floor playing a card game with Avalyn while Wesley watched. Lyndsey’s baby was fast asleep. Henry was lying next to them, he would occasionally lift an eyelid to make sure none were threatening his pack before he would settle back down. Riley and Ben-Ben were taking a more active role. Riley could sense something stirring within the crowd and she didn’t like it one bit. She was patrolling the outer edge of the pack’s borders. Ben-Ben, wanting to please her, followed in step. He wasn’t sure what they were doing, exactly, but he thought there might be the promise of bacon at the end of his duty. Patches was next to Tracy, her tail moving in an agitated manner. Holly and Chloe were sitting by Tracy’s feet, unmoving, staring out into the throng of people.

“Dad might be,” Justin replied to his brother’s question.

“I wish you wouldn’t do that here,” Tracy said as she watched Justin fill his extra rifle magazines with ammunition. “You’re making people nervous.” She was wringing her hands. “I wish your father would get here.”

“We’re safe, I’m here,” Justin told her.

“It’s not us I’m worried about.”

“Oh, but it’s dad...he’ll be fine.”

“Why is Chloe all bristled?” Nicole asked. They all turned to look. Chloe was easily one of the friendliest, happiest dogs any of them had ever come across. She loved attention and would wiggle her behind animatedly when offered a scratch, and she’d never hesitated to offer a good face licking, to the point the whole family began to carry extra napkins in their pockets. Lyndsey alternated her time between looking at her baby then her son, and finally the door, where she hoped her husband would come crashing through. She didn’t think she’d be able to survive the loss of the man she loved so fully.

“Yeah, something weird is going on,” Justin said.

“You think?” Travis asked.

“It’s not that obvious,” Justin replied.

Tracy found herself pulling up on the Velcro cover for her pistol and patting it back down, repeatedly. She’d never really liked guns, and still didn’t, for the most part, but she kept telling herself: when you find yourself stuck in a candy store, you’d best know how to operate a toothbrush. Whenever Mike had downtime she’d ask him for some lessons, which he was all too happy (and sad, it seemed) to help her. Happy because it was a good skill set to have, and sad because she needed to have it at all.
