Chapter 21

“You were flirting with him!”

“I was not, I was just chatting, finding out about him.”

“You were flirting with him. I’ve known you long enough now, Madeline, to know when you’re flirting.”

“You’ve never seen me flirt.”

“Maybe, but this was definitely flirting. You seemed to melt when he smiled at you.”

I didn’t think I’d been flirting but then maybe I had been. I didn’t have time to think about sex right now, maybe later. It’s not like relationships meant a whole lot here. I could spend a few months on top of Tristan after our current (mis)adventure was over. On top? Madeline, focus.

“I did not melt!” Then, thinking better of arguing my way into a big hole, I decided to change the subject, “What do you think, Alex? We stay here for a night then go and check on the den?”

“You’re changing the subject.”

“Am not, well I am, but not deliberately. We do need to decide what we’re going to do,” I said, knowing full well it was deliberate, and wondering if maybe Alex was a little jealous, maybe?

“Alex, do you like Tristan?”

“He seems okay. I don’t think he’s going to give us up to anyone.”

“No, I mean do you like like, him?”

“Ohhhhh, really, Madeline? I’m not pissed because I’m some little jealous girl, I’m pissed because we don’t have time for that. I’m pissed because I want to find my dad.”

I’d give it 50/50, I thought, I’d better be careful around Tristan just in case.

“Fuck off, Madeline, I know that look.”

“We’ve been spending too much time together,” I replied, worrying about what she thought that look had meant and deciding that, yes, she might be onto me, so I went back to safer ground, “so what do you think? About what we do next, I mean?”

Finally relenting, with a massive sigh of her own, she answered, “Fucked if I know.” She was definitely swearing a lot more recently, “But yes, it does make sense we stay here then see what’s going on at the den. We can’t do too much without being able to get back in.”

I had a fitful night’s sleep. The room we were in was surprisingly well equipped and didn’t feel like it was in the same building as the bar. It had clean, light blue walls, wooden floors with a fluffy red rug and just one photograph facing the bed of the Grand Canyon. There were two side tables (I love a side table, all bedrooms should have one, if you don’t, what the hell are you thinking?), and an ensuite bathroom that was simple but with a lovely shower that I had decided to use just before sleeping. I changed my clothes into some blue pjs with a butterfly motif on the back. When I say changed my clothes, I mean literally – the previous clothes became the new ones, with some concentrated thinking. When I returned from the bathroom, Alex had fallen asleep on the bed. I couldn’t resist changing her clothes as well
