Chapter 21
âYou were flirting with him!â
âI was not, I was just chatting, finding out about him.â
âYou were flirting with him. Iâve known you long enough now, Madeline, to know when youâre flirting.â
âYouâve never seen me flirt.â
âMaybe, but this was definitely flirting. You seemed to melt when he smiled at you.â
I didnât think Iâd been flirting but then maybe I had been. I didnât have time to think about sex right now, maybe later. Itâs not like relationships meant a whole lot here. I could spend a few months on top of Tristan after our current (mis)adventure was over. On top? Madeline, focus.
âI did not melt!â Then, thinking better of arguing my way into a big hole, I decided to change the subject, âWhat do you think, Alex? We stay here for a night then go and check on the den?â
âYouâre changing the subject.â
âAm not, well I am, but not deliberately. We do need to decide what weâre going to do,â I said, knowing full well it was deliberate, and wondering if maybe Alex was a little jealous, maybe?
âAlex, do you like Tristan?â
âHe seems okay. I donât think heâs going to give us up to anyone.â
âNo, I mean do you like like, him?â
âOhhhhh, really, Madeline? Iâm not pissed because Iâm some little jealous girl, Iâm pissed because we donât have time for that. Iâm pissed because I want to find my dad.â
Iâd give it 50/50, I thought, Iâd better be careful around Tristan just in case.
âFuck off, Madeline, I know that look.â
âWeâve been spending too much time together,â I replied, worrying about what she thought that look had meant and deciding that, yes, she might be onto me, so I went back to safer ground, âso what do you think? About what we do next, I mean?â
Finally relenting, with a massive sigh of her own, she answered, âFucked if I know.â She was definitely swearing a lot more recently, âBut yes, it does make sense we stay here then see whatâs going on at the den. We canât do too much without being able to get back in.â
I had a fitful nightâs sleep. The room we were in was surprisingly well equipped and didnât feel like it was in the same building as the bar. It had clean, light blue walls, wooden floors with a fluffy red rug and just one photograph facing the bed of the Grand Canyon. There were two side tables (I love a side table, all bedrooms should have one, if you donât, what the hell are you thinking?), and an ensuite bathroom that was simple but with a lovely shower that I had decided to use just before sleeping. I changed my clothes into some blue pjs with a butterfly motif on the back. When I say changed my clothes, I mean literally â the previous clothes became the new ones, with some concentrated thinking. When I returned from the bathroom, Alex had fallen asleep on the bed. I couldnât resist changing her clothes as well
