Cynthia stood in the employee workroom, checking her reflection in the mirror for what felt like the millionth time that morning. She never went to work with a wrinkled uniform, but that morning she had ironed her Prince Hotel housekeeping uniform, taking extra care to make sure it was perfect. Her makeup was light, although she had added an extra swipe of mascara and a touch of pale pink lip gloss. Her hair was smoothed back from her face, but instead of the tight bun, Lucy and Belinda had convinced her to let her beautiful waves hang down her back in a low ponytail. She did not want to wipe her sweaty palms on her uniform, so she clutched a paper towel in her hands instead.

“Girl, stop fidgeting,” Lucy admonished. “You’re beautiful.”

Just then, Carlos appeared at the doorway, his eyes scanning the room. When they landed on her, he smiled and asked, “Are you ready?”

Releasing a held breath, she nodded. “As ready as I’ll ever be.”

With ‘good lucks’ and ‘congratulations’ ringing in her ears, she fell into step next to Carlos as they walked down the hall and rode the service elevator to the top floor. Walking down the hall, they came to a tall wooden door. Carlos knocked once, and, receiving an invitation to enter, he opened the door and motioned for Cynthia to proceed before him.

She realized she was still clutching the paper towel in her palms and quickly slid it into her pants pocket. Sucking in a deep breath, she lifted her head high and walked in. It appeared she was in a smaller outer office, the deep burgundy carpet masking their footsteps. A wooden desk sat to one side, the leather chair empty.

One of the doors in the room opened, and Bob Shelton walked out to greet them. He nodded first to Carlos and then turned his attention to Cynthia. Smiling, he said, “Please, come this way.”

He walked to another large, wooden door at the back of the room and opened it. He moved into the room and Carlos looked down at her, giving a slight nod. She followed Bob into the next office, glad for Carlos’ presence behind her back.

The same deep burgundy carpet continued into this much larger office. Dark paneled walls gave the room an old-world feel. One wall was covered with built-in bookcases, many filled with leather-bound novels. At the back of the room were an ornate wooden desk and plush leather chair. Behind that, underneath the window, stood a wooden credenza.

A sitting area was in the opposite corner, consisting of a leather loveseat and two leather chairs surrounding a coffee table. The lighting was soft, eschewing fluorescent lights, instead lit by numerous lamps.

Standing by one of the windows was a man dressed in an impeccable suit. While Cynthia did not move in circles for people dressed in expensive clothing, she nonetheless knew that his suit cost more than she could imagine. The black suit was well complemented with a pale blue shirt and a royal blue silk tie.
