Chapter 20: Group Hug

“What’s it look like out there?” Cody is asking the tall blond guy with the scar on his cheek. I think he said his name was Albert. The other guy, Boone, can’t stand still.

“It was strangely quiet. We left our vehicle parked at end of road and came on foot. But in all of our driving, we have encountered no one.” He’s definitely from somewhere around Russia.

“Yeah, man like, you just fucking disappeared out there.” Boone’s feet and hands and neck all jerk and move as he talks. “We got Kennard giving you orders on the radio and all of this shooting and then poof, everybody is gone. Kennard stops talking, you’re fuck’n gone. We go look at the convoy and The Bank guys are all gone and the Chinese are rounding up everyone else and pushing them off into this big truck. So we just kinda tip-toed the fuck out of there.”

“I have not seen Kennard since that day,” Albert says. “He is missing as are rest of mercenaries.”

“So’s Georgia, man. She’s up there with all of them,” Boone adds. He looks thoroughly unhappy. “She’s probably up there with that other guy, Jerry. Or one of those soldiers or something. She’ll be gone with somebody else in the drop of a hat.” He looks around at the rest of us staring at him. “But you know, that’s cool. I just hope she’s alright. We all gotta do what we gotta do these days.”

“You have captured soldier?” Albert asks me.

“Yep,” is about all I can think to say.

“He walks free among you though?”

This time I just nod before turning and walking back to the house. More people. People everywhere. In a great, empty, destroyed country, you’d think there’d be plenty of peace and quiet.

Karen catches me as I enter the house. “What are we going to do?”

“Dunno.”

“Are we going to have to move again?”

Tyler steps down from the attic. “No. Hell no. We’re set up here. And I’m sick of moving. We’ve got plants, power, a good well. This place is naturally walled in by the surrounding hills. We’d be crazy to go anywhere else.”

“It is remote here,” Karen agrees. “I’m not sure how anyone would find us. Aside from being led here.”

“You’re right,” I tell them. I pick up Karen’s shotgun from the corner and check to make sure there’s a round chambered. “Get your rifle. Both of you. And come with me.”

Karen grabs the lever action and Tyler snatches up his MP5 from the coffee table. The three of us head out of the house in a beeline back to the group chatting affably outside. Cody sees me coming and turns with his hand resting on the butt of his cowboy gun. His eyes shift quickly as we approach. “What?” he asks defensively.

I cradle the scattergun across my left arm like a suckling newborn. No one misses the click of the safety sliding off. “I’m kind of curious. How the hell did you two end
