Iâve gotten so used to Holdenâs daily deliveries that when he drives up the day before the next home game of the season, I think nothing of it. If anything, Iâm wondering what bizarre and hilarious gift sheâll have thought to pack this time. Iâm running low on Flaminâ Hots, but now that Iâve figured out a routine for grocery shopping, Iâm less reliant on her for my nutritional needs.
In fact, Iâm falling into a rhythm in Sorrowville, and even I am forced to admit that this place isnât that bad. Of course, I could never admit that to my father. He can never know that Iâm getting comfortable here. And the house is still not even close to being a showplace.
But. I donât hate it anymore. At least, not with the vitriol that I used to.
So, instead of rushing to the front door when I hear his car door close, desperate for any connection to the outside world, I shout through the screen door, âDo you need a signature this time?â
âYeah,â Holden calls back. âSpecial delivery. It needs supervision.â
He sounds like heâs on the verge of laughing, which may or may not mean that thereâs a dragon dong falling out of this package. Except, Iâm already the proud owner of a whole bunch of those, so knowing Britt, sheâs upped her game with something even weirder and more scandalous. Butt plugs? Bondage gear?
Except that when I make it to the door, Holden is only holding a small mailing envelope, and he isnât alone.
âTierney!â a high-pitched voice squeals, and a woman-sized blur yanks the screen door wide and launches herself into my arms.
âBritt?â I squeeze her. âWhat are you doing here?â
âMini vacation!â she squeals. âI had to see this place for myself!â
âBut⦠how?â
Behind her, Holden scratches his nose as he shoves the mailing envelope into my hands. Since Britt is here, Iâm not sure who itâs from or how they got ahold of this temporary address. âIâm technically the town ride share, too. Only, most people have their own cars. She called the office, and Pru told me to get her. Is she, um? The one?â
âThe one who sent me a literal crate of dragon dongs?â I deadpan.
Britt, shameless as ever, pulls away. âNot just dragons! There was the rabbit, and that one that looked like a tentacle, and the sparkly unicorn schlongâ¦â
Holden stumbles backward and books it for his vehicle, his face brighter red than Rudolphâs nose. I may or may not have heard him mutter âcity girlsâ before he turned around.
I give Britt a little squeeze before pulling away to glower at her. âSeriously, youâre mighty brave, showing your face after that last package. I think we broke him.â
She flutters her eyelashes innocently. âWhat? I wanted you to have options. Besides, it wasnât my fault it opened up during transit.â
âBetween showing my face around town or running away? I have to work with these people, Britt.â
She grabs the handle of her suitcase and shuffles past me without waiting for an invitation.
