CHAPTER 9
Zach and Lily arrived on Jake’s front porch three hours after the Sunday service ended, both of them still wearing their Sunday best.
Jake answered the door, smiling wide when he saw them. “Come in. Come in. What brings you two by this afternoon?”
“Lily and I are getting married, and want you and Becky to stand up for us,” stated Zach before Lily could speak.
Jake stood there stunned for a moment, then he looked at Lily. “I thought you told Becky you’d never marry this jackass as long as you live.” He nodded toward his brother.
Zach turned to Lily and cocked his eyebrow in question. “Jackass?”
She blushed, but raised her chin in defiance. “I didn’t know you. It was how I felt about every man then, especially the handsome ones.”
His mouth turned up at the corners. “Flattery will get you everywhere.”
She swatted his arm.
He was glad to see her tease him when their world was about to take a very serious turn. Marriage, at least to him, was forever. He’d never done it in all his thirty-eight years, for a reason. Until Lily, he’d never wanted to take the chance, never wanted to risk everything, risk his heart, on one other person. But he had faith in Lily. He loved her and eventually she would realize she loved him, too. It was just a matter of time. He was sure of her feelings. He had to be.
When Jake, Becky and baby Jenny were ready to go, they all went to Reverend Smith’s tent hoping the good reverend was inside.
Zach poked his head through the flap. “Reverend Smith? Are you here?”
“I am, son. Come in.”
He held back the tent flap and let everyone pass in front of him before letting it close behind him.
“Reverend,” said Zach, as he approached the somber-looking man in the worn black suit. “Lily and I would like to get married. Today. Now. We brought our witnesses.”
“What is it with you Anderson boys?” The tall, thin man, with graying brown hair, rose from the table he used as a desk and a pulpit. “You are always in such a hurry to wed.”
Zach grinned and put his arm around Lily. “We want to make sure the right girl doesn’t get away.”
The reverend shook his head, picked up his bible and motioned for them to come forward.
Zach and Lily stood in front of him, Lily on Zach’s left, Becky next to her, holding Jenny. Jake was on Zach’s right.
“Do you have a ring?” asked Jake.
Zach nodded. “I bought it when I started courting Lily. I knew someday she’d be my bride.” Out of his pocket he pulled a thick band of gold and diamonds.
Lily stared at Zach. “How could you know? I didn’t even know until today.”
“I told you. I had faith. What about you? Do you have a ring?”
She nodded. “It was my daddy’s.” From her pocket, she pulled a well worn, slim, plain gold band.
“It’s perfect,” said Zach and couldn’t resist bending to kiss her.
“Mr. Anderson,” said the reverend.
