Day by day, autumn settled in. The Fall Festival took place in Lawrenceville on a glorious Indian summer weekend. A small carnival set up on the streets around the courthouse square—a carousel, a Tilt-a-Whirl, a small Ferris wheel—and food stands sold cotton candy, pronto pups, salt water taffy, lemon shakeups, snow cones. Politicians worked the crowds, handing out free yardsticks, free emery boards, free hand fans. The business club from the high school had an old Ford with the windows broken out, and people were buying chances to take whacks at it with a sledge hammer. The Literary Society—Mary Ellen was the advisor—sold baked goods. The stores stayed open late and hosted sidewalk sales. Robbie and some of her girlfriends strolled around the square looking bored—looking, Mary Ellen thought, as if they’d seen it all and were so weary of this town. Tom Heath was there, taking photographs for the Toma Talk.

When his path intersected with Robbie’s in front of George’s Ice Cream, he said, “Hello there, Robbie.”

Robbie and her friends just walked on by. Mary Ellen saw it all from the Literary Society’s booth. Robbie gave no sign at all that she knew Tom Heath was alive.
