“You did what?” asked Amber, dropping the cutlery back into the tray with a clatter. Her eyebrows were drawn down into an uncharacteristic frown.

Flo shifted from one foot to another. It wasn’t often that Amber got annoyed with her. Or that she got annoyed with anyone, for that matter.

“I walked out,” mumbled Flo, taking a quick sip of the coffee Amber had passed to her as soon as she’d entered the café. Flo didn’t usually go to Amber’s café so early but, after a sleepless night, she needed to talk to someone.

Amber sighed heavily, shot her a disapproving look and walked to the kitchen door from behind which could be heard the thud of oven doors closing, mixers whirring and someone laughing. “Can you cover for me for five minutes?” Amber called out over the noise.

“Hey,” said Flo, as Amber re-emerged. “I’m sorry to turn up out of the blue.” She regretted her spur-of-the-moment decision to seek out her best friend for advice. Was she mad? Her bestie also happened to be Rob’s little sister. She would hardly be unbiased.

“It’s okay, we’re not busy and I have enough staff.” Amber slid into the seat opposite Flo. “So, tell me why you walked out on my brother.” Amber folded her arms neatly across the table and Flo suddenly felt intimidated—not her usual reaction to her oldest friend. But Amber’s self-confidence had gone from strength to strength since her marriage to David, who adored the ground she walked on.

“Well, to begin with, there was the restaurant…” She trailed off. “You know what it’s like,” she said, trying to appeal to Amber’s sympathetic side. “You told me about the time David took you there.”

“It’s an upmarket restaurant,” said Amber in an unpromising, no-nonsense tone. “You knew that before you agreed to the date. That can’t be the reason you walked out on Rob.”

“Well, no, of course not. Not entirely.” She nibbled her bottom lip. Could she really tell Amber how ridiculously jealous she’d been?

“Flo,” said Amber, in a low warning tone.

Flo looked up at Amber and held her gaze. “Charlotte was there.”

Amber sat back in the chair, her hands clasped lightly in front of her, as if she were interviewing someone, her expression serious. Flo didn’t think she’d ever seen Amber less smiley. “Charlotte?”

“Kincaid. You know, Miss Perfect. The lawyer.”

“Yes, I know Charlotte. She’s lovely.”

“You think everyone is lovely.”

“Sure do. Even you.”

“Ooh,” said Flo. “That hurts.”

“I don’t mean anything by it. Except that Charlotte really is a lovely person. And if you weren’t so intimidated by how she looks, you’d realize that, too.”

Flo opened her mouth to remonstrate, but closed it again, realizing that Amber was right.

“You have to be honest with yourself, Flo, because, unless you are, you’ll keep on sabotaging the good things in your life because of your fears.”

“Fears?” repeated Flo weakly. She never thought of herself as a fearful woman.

“Fears,” repeated Amber firmly. “You’re afraid of loving Rob, and you used Charlotte as an excuse. No doubt you told yourself that you’re not good enough, or some such nonsense like that.
