The next day, Richard didnât feel like going on whatever shore excursion Alma and the boys had picked out. Heâd spent the day before running around like a madman while trying to sort his thoughts. It had been impossible with the boys causing chaos everywhere they went.
After breakfast, Richard had told his sister he was staying on board and relaxing. Surprisingly, she hadnât protested and he hadnât seen them since.
It was late afternoon already and heâd relaxed just as he said he would. Or at least heâd watched TV for hours, taken a nap on the upper deck and had a beer at the sports bar. He couldnât remember the last time heâd been this unproductive.
Thoughts of Evieâs kisses plagued his mind all day and he tried to squash them. There was nothing else to think about. Heâd had a lapse in judgment and had every right to beat himself up over it. How stupid of him to get involved with her. No matter how soft and delicious she was.
He walked through the lobby, past the piano bar and turned the corner into the internet cafe. He still had some time before dinner to check e-mails. He paid for half an hour to use the computer, found an unoccupied station and sat down. He set his keycard next to the computer and opened the internet browser. Once he was on the appropriate site, he logged into his e-mail account and scrolled through the inbox. Heâd been gone for barely a week and his inbox was flooded.
He read through questions from work, cleaned out junk e-mails and checked out pictures from a couple of relatives. Before he knew it, the thirty minutes ran out and he had to log out.
He wanted to research the upcoming destinations and possible activities for the boys, so he went back to the clerk to pay for additional time. With another quarter hour reserved, he turned back to his station and his gaze locked with Evieâs across the room. Her eyes widened in surprise. He could still see her after he slumped in his chair, but diverted his attention to the monitor before him.
He opened the internet browser but forgot what he was supposed to research. It took Evie several minutes to walk up to him. He turned from the monitor to look up at her.
âHi Evie, how are you?â
She was clearly annoyed but looked like she was trying not to show it. âIâm fine. How are you, coaâ¦Richard?â She blushed at the mention of his name.
âGood, good.â He nodded and they stared at each other awkwardly.
She moistened her lips and frowned in thought. Seeing the website on his monitor, her face relaxed. âWhat are you looking at?â
He swiveled his chair to look at the monitor. âJust seeing what there is to do for the next few days.â
âWhy are you avoiding me?â she blurted out.
He took a deep breath before looking at her. âIâm not avoiding you.â
She tilted her head sideways. âReally?â
He didnât respond.
âWe should talk.â She leaned her hip against his desk and he moved his chair back.
