I got showered and dressed in my own room, then Bev and I returned to the final day of the expo. Upon returning to the hotel room, we rolled around together in bed one last time before we checked out of the room. We technically could have stayed another night, but I needed to get back to work and resume my day to day. This little vacation was nice, as well as the company, but who am I kidding. I’m not the kind of guy that has an on-going relationship and this was all fun anyways.
I look over to her room while she zips up her bag on its side, turns it upright, and pulls it in the direction of my room.
“I’ve got everything ready on my end, how we looking over here?” she asks in the entryway.
“Just about done,” I look around the room and notice my toothbrush still in the bathroom.
“Having two rooms was a real waste, we could have saved the business points and stayed in one room,” she grins.
“So, it was your plan to take advantage of me this weekend?” I ask stuffing my toothbrush in its pouch and in the side pocket then we’re moving toward the door.
“Hey, you’re the one who kissed me first,” she protests as we walk down the hallway toward the elevator.
“Correction, you licked me.” I give her a pointed, yet playful look.
“I did, didn’t I?” her grin widens, and she puffs out her chest proudly. “Does that mean that you’re mine now?”
We step into the elevator and I say nothing, but my mind is reeling with thoughts of longing. I want it to mean that she’s mine and I’m hers, but that’s not something that I can do. At least it’s not something that I’m sure that I can do. I did take that leap to be with her this weekend, which is far more than I’ve done since the divorce. I look at that as progress, but would I be able to commit to more?
She nods and her expression shadows from my lack of response and we make our way to the parking garage, to my truck then make our way back home in silence.
Upon arriving at her home, I get out of the driver’s side and round the hood so I can open her door for her. I gently push her to the side of the cab and cage her between my arms.
“Thank you for an exceptional weekend, even if you did take advantage of me, I was a willing participant,” I say quietly before lowering my head to cover her lips with mine.
Pulling back, I offer her a smile then move to the truck bed to retrieve her suitcase.
“Any chance that I can get you to come inside for a nightcap?” she asks.
“While I would like to continue the dance that we’re doing, I think it’s best,” I say putting my hands in my back pockets and stepping back, “I think it’s best if we return to our corners and call this weekend what it was.
