Joann Racz later recalled her reaction to the news. “I got a call from my sister. She asked, ‘Did you hear what happened?’ I said no, and instantly got freaked out and scared, thinking maybe she got in a car accident, or maybe she had gotten robbed. I said, ‘No, what is it?’ She said, ‘Dad got arrested at the airport.’
“I just, it was kinda like the most devastating thing for me to hear. I was totally shocked. I had it in the back of my head that it might take place someday, but when I really got the news, with no advance notice, it was just stunning. And it was sad because of the embarrassment for him at the airport, the embarrassment in jail. He was with his current girlfriend. They had been together a couple of years. And it was so unexpected. You’re coming back from a vacation and a long international flight, which is freaky enough, with delays and all. But to have people take you right there. I could not imagine. I just felt so bad that it was the type of situation my dad got himself into. I had nothing to do with it, though. He put himself in that situation. When my sister told me, it was pretty devastating.”
Within a few days, Racz posted a million-dollar bail and went home. Looking back in time, Joann said, “I took my daughter to the Valencia house to be there. Glenn met us at the house. Katelin went to pick him up from jail and brought him back. About an hour later, my dad and Kate arrived. I just recall seeing him step out of the car, with his clothes wrinkled and his hair a little bit messed up. He actually looked pretty clean for being in jail for five days. And he had a big smile on his face, he was happy to be home. If that was me, I’d be screaming and ripping apart the door. Get in quick and take a shower. He didn’t even unload his suitcase from the trip. Oh, he had gifts, he had clothes, you know. Actually, it was probably extremely overwhelming for him to have to come home to us kids like that. But he had a little chuckle about it, like ‘God, I can’t even believe I was there. What the heck is going on?’
“For me, I’d be crying, screaming, cursing. But he was like ‘Thank God, I never want to go there again.’ No crying or sadness. I didn’t want him to feel humiliated, and I wanted to show him that we were there for him.”
The bail enabled Racz to remain free pending the outcome of the trial, which would be held more than seven months later in the San Fernando Courthouse.
