Karen

KAREN HUMMED as she put the finishing touches on a painting she was working on. She could hardly wait to see Stanley. They usually spent every weekend together, but with Scott’s situation and everything that had happened, there hadn’t been the chance. She’d spent the last hour putting together everything else Scott would need for his trip. This was definitely a chance for him to heal and see he didn’t need Craig.

The sight of Craig on his knees yesterday flashed to the forefront of her mind, and she frowned. He seemed like he really was upset over Scott being hurt. Maybe he was telling the truth. Karen hoped so for Scott’s sake. Was it possible he was just scared of losing Scott as a friend?

The front door slamming hard enough to rattle the windows brought her out of her thoughts. “Karen,” Scott bellowed from downstairs.

Thankfully their parents weren’t home, for that scream of her name would surely have brought them running. She hurried down the stairs to see Scott looking pissed off as hell, and a guilty-looking Stanley. Uh-oh!

“Scott, I can—”

He cut her off. “You had no fucking right, Karen. How could you tell him?” Scott was breathing heavily and his nostrils were flared, eyes wild. She knew he was really mad.

“I was so mad that it just came out,” she mumbled. “But someone had to tell him! He’s done nothing but hurt you!”

“It was my choice,” Scott screamed. “Not yours!”

“I know and I’m sorry!” She started to cry, swiping at the tears spilling down her cheeks. “You’re my brother and I love you! I couldn’t stand to just sit by and watch him hurt you anymore! He needed to know so he wouldn’t….” Her voice cracked.

Scott’s anger died and he stepped forward, hugging her tightly. He rested his chin on the top of her head. “I know, Kar. I’m sorry I yelled, but…. God, everything is a mess. And I’m leaving right as it’s exploding.”

“He wants to see you,” she said in a tiny voice.

“He does?” Scott pulled back to look down at her.

She nodded warily. “He wants to talk to you. Today. I told him you’d be home today.”

“Did you tell him I was leaving tonight?” Scott stalked into the living room and sank down onto the couch, strain lines all over his face. Karen followed closely on his heels.

“No. He doesn’t know. If you don’t want to see him, I’ll tell him you aren’t home again.”

“No!” Scott jerked his head up to look at her. “No. I need to see him before I leave. To tell him I’m sorry,” he said sadly.

“Sorry? For what?” she demanded. “He’s the one who hurt you!”

His lips twisted bitterly. “I put my emotions into him. By myself. He didn’t ask me to love him. And it’s not his fault he hurt me. He didn’t even know. How can I blame him or even be angry with him?”

Karen knew his words made sense, but she couldn’t stop herself from defending her brother. “He’s your best friend! He should have known.
