Rick Mcllwain and Phil Williams knew that they could not let Tim Harris cool off overnight. They still had too many unanswered questions. It just didn't make sense that Lorraine Hendricks's gray Honda should end up back on the shoulder of 1-95 in the exact spot where Tim Harris said he had pulled her over. They didn't believe that she had ever driven it down into the wooded median. They suspected she had been taken down there under some kind of duress—whether Tim Harris had used his dog to frighten her into submission or his gun (as he had with Sandy two weeks after Lorraine's murder), or simply the authority his position and uniform gave him.

They gave Tim thirty minutes. They were sure he would head for DeeLisa's house. As much as he seemed to despise women, he always went to them for comfort, and they knew Sandy wasn't about to let him in. DeeLisa was standing by him, figuratively and literally holding his hand.

They were right. Tim was at DeeLisa's, and they asked him if he was ready to continue the interview he had left so precipitously. No, he didn't want to. "I'd rather not talk to you anymore right now," Harris said.

There was nothing they could do. They couldn't force him to talk. The guy was about ready to blow and spill everything. They knew it, but they couldn’t hurry it, and they couldn't make it happen.

If there-was one person Tim Harris respected, it was his captain, Dean Sullivan. Sullivan was advised of the situation and said he would be willing to speak with Tim if he came back in. He would do the best he could for his trooper. If Tim was guilty of murder, he would have to continue talking to the investigators. If he was innocent, he needed to cooperate with them to clear himself.

An hour and a half after their first visit to DeeLisa Davis's house Williams and Mcllwain returned. DeeLisa had just come back from Gainesville, where her young son had had surgery earlier in the day. She probably had not had a worse day in a decade. She looked exhausted and apprehensive. She greeted Phil Williams, her old classmate, and apprehensively agreed to get Tim.

"Tim,'' Phil said, "you need to come on back down there and finish talking with us."

Not surprisingly, Tim didn't want to go. He changed his mind when he learned that Captain Sullivan had come in to talk with him and was waiting.

"Are you going to let me come home after I talk to you?" Tim asked.

"You take your car up there. It still stands the same way. You want to leave, you leave," Mcllwain said.

But Tim Harris knew. Even as he headed back down to the State Attorney's Office he took DeeLisa with him. If he could not drive his car home, if he should be arrested, she could drive it home for him. And Tim wanted DeeLisa with him when he spoke to his captain. The trio remained behind closed doors for half an hour or more.
