‘Hey, do you want to go upstairs?’ Fernando offered. ‘I normally do a workout at this time of day.’

During the boom years of the 1980s, Barings had bought ten memberships of the health club on the top floor of its New Otani building. The cost was rumoured to be $1 million each. But during the recession several of the directors had been sacked, so the spare health club memberships were shared out to traders like Fernando.

‘Sure,’ I agreed with alacrity. ‘Let’s go.’

We took the chrome lift up to the 34th floor, and stepped out. The lobby to the health club was decked out in bamboo and other woods, and looked like a large log cabin. Two pretty girls in white sweatshirts stood at the entrance and gave us keys to the lockers. Inside, we changed and picked up some white fluffy towels. Fernando went off to lift weights while I wandered along to the onsun baths, the hot Japanese baths, where I sat on a wooden ledge with foaming bubbling water up to my neck. I sat there for an hour, feeling the tension in my back from the last week and the flight slowly dissolve away. Then I wandered around and stared out of the windows at the skyscrapers opposite, teeming with office life. I was in the middle of the world’s most expensive real estate – a glass of Coke would cost £10 here – mooching around stark bollock naked and looking out at the Japanese banks, the largest money centres in the world. I wondered what my father would have made of it all. He’d have thought it a complete farce – he’d have much preferred his local pub. And I doubted he would ever have mooched around stark bollock naked.
