From The Forest

John swung the stick and hit Neil’s left arm as he defended himself.

“John! What the fuck?” Neil stepped back, wincing in pain.

Gavin ran forward and grabbed the stick from John, kicking him down to the ground as he did so.

John sat on the ground scowling at him, “You sneaky twat!”

“What the fuck’s wrong with you?” Gavin held the stick, ready to use it as a weapon.

“John, it was the mast, wasn’t it.......? it did something to you.” Neil slowly approached him.

John moved backwards on his hands and feet, and then he stood up quickly and glared at each of them.

“This isn’t you.” Neil moved towards John again, but Gavin held his right arm out and stopped Neil approaching any further.

Donna had been the first to see John running towards them, and now she drew Gavin’s attention to something else. Patting him on the shoulder, she pointed at the area behind where John was standing; something with a blue glow was beginning to emerge from the forest on the left side of the track.

“Neil…” Gavin drew his attention to the glowing.

John regarded them all cautiously then turned around slowly. They all stood watching in disbelief as four glowing blue goats crossed over the track in single file.

“What are they?” Donna watched in wonder, “they’re the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen.”

“Do you know anything about this, Neil?” Gavin could only stare at the sight ahead of him.

“No...”

“The Blue Goat Knights.” John spoke calmly.

“Blue Goat Knights?” Neil began to approach his friend once more. John’s unkempt dark hair was moving as if hit by a sudden breeze, yet the air was warm and still. The small, glowing blue goats paid them no attention, and before long something else appeared to be manifesting.

Donna squeezed Gavin’s arm.

“Yeah, I see them.”

Small creatures brandishing swords and shields were riding on the goats’ backs. They were no more than two feet tall, dressed in some sort of armour, had huge black eyes and wore Norman-style helmets. They looked towards the four confused people, before turning their attention back to the direction in which they were travelling in. As they disappeared into the forest on the right side of the track, they left behind them a trail of smokeless purple flames lighting up the ground.

“We have to follow!”

“Wait, John, those things must be infected with radiation or something.”

“No, I don’t think so, Neil, we have to follow.”

Without warning, John ran forward into the purple flames and fell onto the ground. Neil, Gavin and Donna ran after him and noticed that he wasn’t burning.

Neil stuck his hand in the flames, “it’s not hot, it’s cool.”

“What?” Gavin stuck his right hand into the flames and found that there was a cool and fresh feeling that ran right up his arm.

“It’s beautiful.” Donna did the same.

John stood up slowly, and the other three stepped back from him, preparing for trouble.

“John?” Neil stood sideways, ready to defend himself.

“It’s alright, Neil, I’m not going to hurt any of you.” John looked
