Chapter 23

I continued, “But that’s because I don’t like her. I also suspect almost everyone else associated with Alcott, both the facility and the hospital.”

We arrived at Harold’s grave. All the Meisners were together in the same area, but they had small above-ground granite markers. Jean and I repeated the prayers we had said earlier, and placed stones on top of Harold’s and his parents’ and grandparents’ tombstones.

As we walked back to the car, I commented, “Why did Harold never use ‘Harry’?”

Jean laughed. “Mom was right when she called him a stick in the mud. He was always very formal and straight laced. He had a fit when I named Trudy with a name that ended in a y. And he never called Larry anything except Lawrence. I’m not sure why, but I think he believed it made us seem more aristocratic. I miss the man every day, but he could be such a snob. And boring!” She laughed louder.

I shook my head in wonder at how much of her inner life Jean was revealing to me today. “Legal Seafood for lunch?” I asked.

“I thought you’d never ask.”

As usual, the parking lot at the Burlington Mall was almost filled, especially near the outside entrance to Legal. I had hoped it was still early enough that the famed restaurant wouldn’t be too crowded yet. Obviously, others had the same idea.

We finally found a parking spot—I followed someone who was leaving the mall and waited to take her spot—and trudged across the lot to the restaurant. It wasn’t quite as crowded as we’d feared, and we were escorted to a small table. Unfortunately, we passed another small table occupied by Lois Hirt and her daughter. So much for being tired and wanting to go home. Evelyn didn’t look too thrilled to see us again, but Lois was beaming as though we were her long-lost sisters, reunited at last.

“How wonderful to see you here! We haven’t started to eat yet. Maybe we can move to a table for four and you can join us.”

“No, it’s okay, Mrs. Hirt,” Jean answered with a bit too much alacrity. “It’s so crowded here. It will be easier for the staff if we take the table for two they have for us. Enjoy your lunch. I’m sure we can catch up later at Alcott. Aviva and I will be stopping by there later.”

“Quick thinking,” I whispered to Jean. Lois waved at us gaily as we followed the host to our designated table, fortunately on the other side of the restaurant from Lois and Evelyn. “Do you want to go to Alcott?”

“We probably should stop by, check Mom’s place and make sure you didn’t overlook anything of value.”

“Not a bad idea. When I talked with Trudy last night, she said Mom had asked how she could hide files on her laptop from prying eyes. Trudy told her to save the files onto a thumb drive instead of the hard drive. I didn’t see one in the room, but I wasn’t looking for one either.
