Chapter 12: Eve

The last couple of weeks felt like a blur. She was throwing herself into work more than ever before. It was a good distraction from the hell surrounding her family. She also wanted the project she was working on to be put to bed as swiftly as she could manage. They had to wait the full sixty days for all of the residents to find new homes so at this point it was just a waiting game.

The second the place was open, she was going to be on her way back to California. A few states between her and her parents were necessary right now. She couldn’t even stand to be in the same room as them. Her mother was acting like everything was fine. Her father acted even worse. Like he knew that no matter if he did it or not his high paid attorneys were going to get him out of it. He was invincible and no one could touch him.

That might be true in court, but when it came down to it Victoria was right. The second he was accused he gained a scarlet letter that wasn’t going away with this lawsuit. His reputation was over. Standing by him would ruin her too. She’d be one of those women that stood by and said nothing while a man on top got away with hurting an innocent woman. She couldn’t do it. There was a lot she was willing to do for her family. Not this.

“Is this seat taken?”

Without moving an inch, Eve stared in shock and disbelief at Wendy. She flashed a lopsided grin.

“Wendy. What are you doing here?”

“I was hoping I would find you here.”

“Why exactly?”

Wendy closed her eyes and took a breath. When she opened her eyes, she shifted her weight from one foot to the other. “I wanted to apologize to you.”

Eve smiled, putting her attention back to her drink. “You have nothing to apologize for.”

Wendy sat down next to her. “But I do. I judged you before knowing the whole story.”

“You have the whole story. I’m a Tilman. Enough said.”

Eve didn’t have to look at Wendy to know the look on her face. Pity. She didn’t need pity. She didn’t deserve it.

“I heard about your dad.”

Eve tried to bite back a groan, but couldn’t help it. “Join the club. The whole world has heard about my father. I’ve even got room service looking at me with that look.”

“What look?”

“The look on your face right now.” Eve looked at Wendy. She smiled and nodded. “There it is.”

“I’m not looking at you in any way.”

“Sorry to tell you this, Wendy, but you might want to work on your poker face. I’m sure it doesn’t help in your profession.”

“I’m just looking at you, Eve.”

“No. You’re looking at me with pity. Everyone is looking at me like that, and it is driving me crazy. I shouldn’t be pitied. I should be hated.”

Wendy furrowed her eyebrows. “Why should you be hated? You didn’t do anything.”

“Exactly. I didn’t do anything.
