TWENTY EIGHT

Michaela’s first memory is of when she is five years old.

(She floats. She floats.)

The child Michaela holds her parents’ hands: Jack’s right, Simone’s left. They swing her between them. Her feet leave the earth

(she floats)

and smack back down with a thwack!

“Where is Jimmy?” Michaela asks.

“Who is Jimmy?” is the reply.

Michaela runs off and into the arms of Grandpa Mick. He throws her into the air

(she floats)

and then catches her.

“Do it again Grandpa,” she says.

Her Grandpa obliges and throws Michaela up

(she floats)

and catches her again.

“Where is Jimmy?” Michaela asks.

“Who is Jimmy?” is Grandpa Mick’s reply.

(She floats.)

It is Michaela’s tenth birthday. She opens a present from Grandma Janice and Grandpa Mick. It is a DVD of her favourite film.

Michaela has friends over for her party. One friend is missing.

“Where is Jimmy?” she asks.

“Who is Jimmy?” chorus the adults.

Michaela throws a tantrum. She jumps repeatedly into the air

(she floats)

and then rolls about on the floor. She stills. A moment of blessed silence, then:

“WHERE IS JIMMY?” Michaela yells at the top of her voice. “HE SAYS HE WON’T LEAVE ME.”

(She floats.)

It is Michaela’s eighteenth birthday and she cries all day long for her Jimmy.

“Where is Jimmy?” she sobs. “He should be by my side.”

“Who in hell is Jimmy? Tell me you bitch,” Grandpa Mick says and slaps her hard about the face.

(She floats.)
