They finished their meagre meal and Timo shrugged on his backpack. Then he walked determinedly away, and they left the voice behind.

Around the middle of the afternoon, they reached the suburb of Gaillard. Soon after, the first trees and green pastures appeared. Timo struck south and picked up the signs for Monnetier, which he remembered from his childhood to be a small village and ski resort in the alpine foothills.

The road entered a forested area before it started a steep ascent. After half a mile, it became a narrow switchback hiking trail that zig-zagged through fields of Edelweiss. Looking around, Timo saw the effects of the quakes must have mostly bypassed the countryside here because the few homes he passed had withstood the tremors and aftershocks. And when he paused to get his breath and looked back at Geneva, the city appeared normal from a distance, except there was a hazy dust cloud still hanging in the air.
