Less patient than Darcy, Elizabeth decided to write a second letter even though she had not yet received a reply to her first. She was a little anxious that he might have been offended by the impertinent tone she had adopted, but reminded herself that he was well aware of her tendency to cheekiness, and had declared himself in the immediate aftermath of her intemperate response to Caroline Bingley. Surely he could withstand a little teasing. If not, she told herself, if a little impertinence discouraged him, it were better to know as much before they went beyond a courtship, since she did not relish the thought of marriage to a man who wanted her to be other than she was. Yet there was a small part of her which worried that distance and the weight of his family duties might leave him too sombre to appreciate her whimsy.

Thus with a mix of respect for the solemnity of his circumstances and determination to be her true self, she began her second missive:
