CHAPTER 14

The Hunts' library was a handsome room lined with mahogany bookcases with fronts of glazed glass. Cam Rohan and Simon Hunt were standing beside a large in laid sideboard laden with glittering spirit decanters. Holding a glass half-filled with amber liquid, Hunt gave Win an inscrutable glance as she entered the li brary. Amelia, Mrs. Hunt, and Dr. Harrow were also there. Win had the curious feeling that it couldn't really be happening. She had never been involved in a scandal before, and it wasn't nearly as exciting or interesting as she had imagined while lying in her sickbed. It was frightening.

Because in spite of her earlier words to Merripen about wanting to be compromised, she hadn't meant any of it. No sane woman would wish for such a thing. Caus ing a scandal meant ruining not only Win's prospects, but those of her younger sisters. It would cast a shadow over the entire family. Her carelessness was going to harm all the people she loved.

"Win." Amelia came to her at once, embracing her firmly. "It's all right, dear. We'll manage this."

Had Win not been so distressed, she would have smiled. Her older sister was famous for her confidence in her ability to manage anything, including natural disasters, foreign invasions, and stampeding wildlife. None of those, however, could come close to the havoc of a London society scandal.

"Where is Miss Marks?" Win asked in a muffled voice.

"In the drawing room with Beatrix. We're trying to keep appearances as normal as possible." Amelia sent a tense, rueful smile to the Hunts. "But our family has never been especially good at that."

Win stiffened as she saw Leo and Merripen enter the room. Leo came straight to her, while Merripen went to lurk in the corner as usual. He wouldn't meet her gaze. The room was filled with a charged silence that caused the down on the back of her neck to rise.

She hadn't gotten herself into this all alone, Win thought with a flare of anger.

Merripen would have to help her now. He would have to protect her with any means at his disposal. In cluding his name.

Her heart began to pound so heavily that it almost hurt.

"It appears you've been making up for lost time, Sis," Leo said flippantly, but there was a flicker of concern in his light eyes. "We have to be quick about this, since people will talk even more in light of our collective ab sence. Tongues are wagging so fast, they've created a strong breeze in the drawing room."

Mrs. Hunt approached Amelia and Win. "Winnifred."

Her voice was very gentle. "If this rumor is not true, I will take action at once to deny it on your behalf."

Win drew in a trembling breath. "It is true," she said.

Mrs. Hunt patted her arm and gave her a reassuring glance. "Trust me, you are not the first nor will you be the last to find yourself in this predicament."

"In fact," came Mr. Hunt's lazy drawl, "Mrs. Hunt has firsthand experience in just such a--"

"Mr.
