Chapter Seven

Ajax pressed close to Cayden. He felt his body tremble and he fought the urge to shift. Running and hiding wouldn’t solve anything.

“Easy, Ajax, my mate,” Cayden murmured. He tightened the arm he had around Ajax’s body as he bent over and set his coffee on the floor. Settling his now free hand on Ajax’s thigh, he rubbed lightly. “You are safe here. None of these people will hurt you.”

“I-I know.” Ajax glanced at Cayden, offering a tremulous smile. “I just, um, the scent startled me.”

Cayden rubbed his thigh again. “Okay. I just hate scenting how upset you are,” he admitted, smiling back at him. “I like it when you smell happy.”

Ajax rested his head on the crook where Cayden’s chest met shoulder and snuggled against him. “I like happy, too,” he whispered.

“I did go to Russia, but I was with the group that cleared the abandoned facility,” Miach said, interrupting the moment. He rubbed the back of his neck with his right hand as he leaned against the wall with his left shoulder. “As soon as we confirmed that all the shifters were cleared and the facility was abandoned, some of us returned to the States. I was one of them.” He glanced at the slender male standing at his side. “We didn’t even return to the vampire’s estate, so you never smelled me. I guess in a way, that’s good.”

“Why?” Ajax questioned, confused why the male would think that.

Miach removed his hand from his neck and waved it in his direction. “Well, look how fearful you are,” he pointed out. “No offense. If you’d smelled me before gaining some comfort in your surroundings, not to mention the comfort your mate offers you, you never would have willingly come here.” He grimaced and added, “You probably would have tried to get away, which would have left you vulnerable to recapture, since you were in a strange place, and you never would have met your mate.”

Ajax nodded slowly. “You are not them, but you smell similar,” he acknowledged. “I would not want to accuse your family of doing something…like that.”

“Why don’t we start with you telling us what Miach’s smell means to you, Ajax,” Shane ordered. The big beta wolf shifter sat on the arm of a large cushioned chair and stared at him with cool, dark eyes. “It’s obvious it causes you fear. Can you tell us why?”

Nodding again, Ajax slowly explained, “I lived alone in the mountains. I smelled other shifters, not cat like me, and I was curious.” He grimaced, remembering what assuaging his interest had cost him. “I went to see who they were. Three fox shifters caught my scent and chased me. They chased me into a valley and I felt the pain of something hitting my side,” he told them, shivering at the memories. “I grew tired and dizzy and my legs stopped working. I could not keep moving and then a pair of men were there and the foxes caught up. The men smelled odd like you.
