They reached the camp in record time, not taking any breaks and moving at a brisk jog. Even though some of Colton’s group struggled here and there during the trip, she was impressed when they didn’t complain and kept pace to the best of their ability.

Whenever Colton noticed it happening, he would slow down for a couple of minutes to allow them to catch their breath, but as soon as they did, he picked it back up.

Keeping close to Carol, Deb looked at the sun as the camp came into view, trying to calculate how much time had passed. Had it only been this morning that Alex had knocked on their cabin door? His kids were going to be devastated when they got back to camp and found out the horrible news.

Goodness, the twins were still out there, with no idea their dad was dead. Jonah had no idea of the danger they were all in.

Hanging to the back of the group, Deb swallowed hard when she saw Laura look up, smiling as she started wheeling her way toward them from the eating area, Bobbi hot on her heels with Jack on her hip.

Bobbi called cheerfully, “There you guys are, we were starting to get concerned with how long it was taking to fix a leak.”

Even hanging at the back of the group, Deb was close enough to see the way Laura’s smile fell when she noticed how somber they all looked. She scanned their group, paused, then scanned it again. Her voice was quiet yet dangerous when she asked, “Molly? Colton? Where is my family? Where’s Alex and the kids?”

Molly swallowed hard, moving closer and crouching next to her, reaching over and allowing Argent to sniff her hand. Laura buried her hand in Argent’s ruff and stared at Molly, as if she could get answers out of her by sheer willpower alone. “Molly?”

“Remember that big crash we heard?” Molly started gently. “Well, that was the dam giving way. The twins and Tommy were trapped on the other side of the river. They’re heading up to the old bridge, and they should be home by tomorrow at the latest. They know where all the caches are, and they’re smart. They’ll be all right and laughing about what an adventure they had.”

Laura’s expression eased a little only to harden again. “Then did Alex go to meet them? And why did you allow him to go alone? It’s dangerous with that man running around out there. Bobbi told me a little bit about him, and he sounds like an awful human being.”

Bobbi looked over at them, suddenly realizing Jonah wasn’t with their group either. Her expression was an interesting mix of panic and curiosity. Deb shook her head slightly and signed. Fine. Other side. Back tomorrow.

Bobbi started to nod before she froze as realization started to sink in.

Colton moved over and joined Molly, his expression sympathetic.

“No,” Laura breathed.

Colton reached out and took her free hand, squeezing it gently. “I’m sorry, Laura, there was an accident.
