Over the next few weeks, Jackie continued his routine as though there had been nothing to spark any suspicion of Rasul, but there were plenty of suspicious activities to go around, and not related to his business dealings or his associates.

There wasn’t any particular change in our relationship that caused me to question Jackie’s behavior. The fact that Jackie had stopped being as attentive to me as he was in the past was clear; however, I chalked it up to his business. Besides, the changes were gradual, not at all like blindsides in the past that I would never see coming. Still, I missed those little romantic gestures of his; little charms and trinkets he’d leave me with messages of his affection and love. Fact was, Jackie was rarely home anymore, and I was lonely without him.

Notwithstanding all the things I missed in our relationship, the thought of turning a suspicious eye toward him was patently out of the question for me. Such was the nature of the work he did and the business he was into. I simply got used to being with my girlfriends again and looked forward to hanging out with them when we could. I missed Jackie more than he knew and more than I would allow myself to feel.

On one warm and sunny summer day in 1985, my friend Lydia and I were out and about, enjoying every bit of the day. Jackie was home with Jackiem and had asked me stop by Earl’s to pick up some money while I was out. When I got to Earl’s house, I called Jackie to let him know I had arrived and commented on a cute little boy who was there.

There was Earl, his girlfriend and another woman. Earl’s girlfriend introduced the woman as her sister; a very tall, brown-skinned woman. I thought the woman appeared overly friendly toward me; a fact which gave me enough pause to recall that I’d seen her before.

I’d gone to a neighborhood Chicken George restaurant and while standing in line, I noticed a commotion going on in the front of the counter between the counter girl and a customer. Then I saw Earl’s girlfriend’s sister standing there, and here she was- again. If I believed in coincidence, a chance encounter at a Chicken George would have been a completely logical sequence of events leading to the formal introduction at Earl’s. But I don’t believe in coincidence, since if I did, something inside which caused me to make a mental snapshot of her for retrieval later on wouldn’t have done so.

About a week later, while in the laundry room washing clothes, I noticed a note in Jackie’s sock. I took it out of his sock and looked at it. There were three telephone numbers of three different women on the small, crumpled piece of paper. To my surprise, one of the names was of the Chicken George Bitch; the same woman who I felt was just too damn friendly after I’d met
