The family made a request for information regarding the death, to which Second Lieutenant Charleton Brown replied:

Your letter asking for particulars of your brother’s death, has been handed to me, as his platoon officer was severely wounded at the same time and is now in England.

Your brother was hit by a shot when the battalion was going into action on 1 August and died before night. He was not conscious between the time of his being wounded and the time of his death and therefore suffered no pain.

As the battalion was not definitely in action I am glad to say it was possible for your brother’s body to be buried quietly and reverently and with such rites as you and he would have wished. I am not allowed to tell you the place of his burial but a record is kept and the Department of the War Office which deals with this will inform you either now or by the time it will be possible for you to visit this country.

Your brother was in my Company in the 17th Battalion and I had some slight knowledge of him there, as being apart from the ordinary run of men one had to deal with.

Will you please convey to your sister and accept my condolences in your loss.
