As luck would have it, it was a pretty quiet morning for a Saturday. Business was a steady trickle, and Rosie was supremely grateful for the chance to take it a little easier. By lunchtime she was seriously flagging in terms of energy, and she couldnât even call on her magical reserves to see her through. Gabe managed the drinks and most of the orders while Maggie was busy baking out back, leaving Rosie to bus tables and keep the dishes and food prep under control.
But the lunch rush hit with a vengeance. The soup of the day was one of the most popular items on their lunch menu, which was easy to prepare but still needed a steady hand for delivery, which took Maggie out of the equation. Rosie had been ferrying dishes back and forth between tables for half an hour straight and was starting to feel a little frazzled when Gabe called her over to the coffee machine.
âWhatâs up?â she asked, making her way over to him.
âWeâre swapping for a bit,â he told her, wiping the nozzle of the milk frother with his dishcloth. âYou havenât stopped all day, and you look a bit pale.â
âIâm fine,â Rosie said, brushing off his concern with a shake of her head. âJust tired from last night.â
âAnd cleaning up this morning,â he pointed out, referring to the plants, âand being a staff member down. Youâre great at looking after other people, but not so great at looking after yourself, huh?â
Rosie tucked her chin in, surprised at being called out by her own stepson.
âItâs fine,â she repeated, unaware of just how like Tammy she was sounding. âThe rush is nearly over.â
âI donât care.â Gabe folded his arms over his chest in a way that reminded Rosie so much of Declan, she nearly smiled. âYouâre going to take over drinks, and Iâm going to bring you a kitchen stool to sit on between orders.â
She could see the familiar stubbornness in his green eyes, and she knew what it meant. When Declan got his mind set about doing something a particular way, he wouldnât be swayed. Rosie exhaled, her shoulders relaxing.
Gabe smiled as soon as he noticed it, taking it as a mark of her defeat.
âThank you,â she told him gratefully.
âYouâre welcome,â he said back, his lips curved in a smile. He leaned in as he passed her on his way to fetch the stool. âThat wasnât so hard, was it?â
Taking orders and making drinks was still hectic, but she was grateful not to be balancing a tray of food or dirty dishes on her hip. That stuff got heavy after a few passes, and while she could normally manage it without too much trouble, today she was feeling every inch of her midlife maladies. Her stomach felt like it was tied in knots, and her head felt like it was full of sawdust.
Rosie didnât need to be a witch to predict an early night in her immediate future.
She got out a metal mixing
