Record jacket from 1989 featuring Jan Wheaton, Jim Latimer, Richard Davis (see chapter 14), and Peter Lundberg. COURTESY OF PETER LUNDBERG

In the early 2000s, she found a new musical partner: Israeli-born and classically trained pianist Matan Rubenstein, who was then a graduate student at UW. She remembers him serving as her “anchor” for almost ten years, until he left town. They made a record, Expressions of Love, in 2005. Although Wheaton still works when she can, she is not actively seeking music jobs, and many of her gigs are private parties and fund-raisers. While she enjoys singing for many occasions, including events like Live at Five on Capitol Square, she says, “[I miss] the club atmosphere. Because then I can really reach out and grab you . . . and establish some kind of connection.” Wheaton has appreciated her career in music. “It kept me out of jail,” she says, “it gave me some play money, it made me some pretty good friends, and it gave me the opportunity to work with some really special people—which everybody doesn’t get.”
