Beth didn’t live far off Main Street, but never before had that short distance felt like a hundred miles. They barely spoke as they made their way through the crowd, hand in hand, stopping only to say a quick hello to friends and neighbors. As soon as they turned off Main Street onto Beth’s street, she allowed herself a second to think about what she was doing. Dozens of people had seen her with Slade at the party. The sudden indifference shocked her. She’d always been a woman who played by the rules. At least ever since Jules had been born. She’d seen firsthand what breaking the rules would get her and as much as she loved her daughter, there were definitely things she’d do over again if she could. But in that moment, with Slade holding her hand so tightly that she could feel his heat through their gloves, Beth didn’t care.

She led him up the walk to her front door and stuck the key in the lock. Before she could turn it, Slade grabbed her and in one strong motion, flipped her around and pressed her into the door.

“You’re sure she’s out for the night?” he whispered roughly in her ear. Desire flooded her. If he hadn’t held her up with his body pressed so tightly to hers, her legs might have given out completely.

“Yes.” She managed to get the word out and it was all Slade needed. He reached around her, twisted the key in the lock, pushed the door open, and moved her backwards into the house.

She heard the door close behind her somehow as he pushed her up against the wall. He pinned her with his mouth; their tongues crashed together in a need that had been building for too long. She’d thought their kisses were loaded with passion before, but even they were tame compared to what happened between them now. Her body trembled with need as Slade managed to get his hands between them long enough to unzip her jacket and pull it down over her shoulders. Somehow she pulled her lips away from his long enough to pull her sweater over her head before she claimed his mouth once again.

It was when he unzipped her jeans, and guided them over her hips, that she froze. She pulled her head back, gasped for breath and squeezed her eyes shut.

“Beth. I’ll stop if you want me to.” Slade’s voice was strained. She knew he would stop if she asked him to. It would require great restraint, but she knew he would. “What do you want?”

She opened her eyes, and tried to focus on him. His eyes were dark with desire and want. Every part of her body told her what to do, what she wanted. Her chest heaved with every breath as she tried to slow her mind long enough to figure out her thoughts.
