Chapter 14

We were about to start. I had linked up with Amelia and Kenneth, one on each side of me. Amelia held my hand ever so lightly as if she wanted to be able to break our contact with the smallest of movements. I squeezed her hand reassuringly, even though I was feeling pretty insecure myself.

Amelia looked up at me, her blue eyes full of worry, like a grey, troubled sea. I smiled at her and then a flash of yellow and pink just past her head caught my eye again. It was closer now. I broke eye contact with Amelia and looked across at Kade, who was standing off to one side of us, not wanting to get too close to the action, but close enough to assist if it was needed.

“Kade,” I said, trying not to sound too unsettled. “Did you see some movement in the trees over there?”

Kade looked at me blankly for a few moments. He seemed to be figuring out whether I was trying to distract him. I nodded in the direction I had just seen the pink and yellow flash of movement.

“You saw something?” he asked, glancing in the direction I had indicated.

“Yeah, I saw something, too. Just a moment ago,” Amelia confirmed in my stead. “Something pink and yellow.”

“Pink and yellow?” Kade’s head snapped back to look at us sternly.

“I know, it sounds far fetched, but it’s what we saw,” I said, shrugging. It was actually rather comical and I had a hard time not laughing. The only thing that stopped me was knowing that wouldn’t go down well with Kade and I needed him to take me seriously right now.

“Who would go running around the woods in pink and yellow?” He frowned at me, but I knew it was merely a rhetorical question.

“I think the question is, who would go snooping around here, in any color at all?” Logan chipped in.

“The boy has a point,” Bale said. “We should halt operations and check that out.”

I sighed inwardly, wishing I hadn’t brought the sighting to anyone’s attention. It was extremely frustrating to be on the brink of trying out my awesome idea and then having it delayed. But I also knew Bale was right. Especially since we were going to practice a new maneuver. It could be anyone out there.

Bale and Logan were nominated to scout the area from the north side, while Kade and Kenneth homed in on the south. Amelia, Aunt Linda, and I stayed at the practice area with Wendy. I watched the men go off, trying not to pay too much attention to Logan’s receding form. Then a thought hit me.

“What if this is a trap?”

My words were scarcely cold when shouts erupted from behind us and a ragtag bunch of what I guessed to be Hope Falls citizens descended upon the group of women waiting in the valley. The decoy, the one dressed in pink and yellow, suddenly sped from the trees at a point neatly between the two advancing duos of men, whooping wildly.
