The Hearst chain of papers announces that Winsor McCay and his famous characters have joined the “American’s family.”

McCay’s second animated film, How a Mosquito Operates (released in 1912), was based on this June 5, 1909, Dream of the Rarebit Fiend comic strip. A gluttonous mosquito sucks the blood of an alcoholic and becomes so inebriated he cannot stand. The layout of the strip was adapted to the staging of the animated cartoon’s main scene with little change, although McCay added new variety to the character’s poses and costumes, and personality touches to the mosquito.
