“Why did Charlotte leave like that?” Bobby asked.

Rick glanced into his son’s worried eyes. Bobby had no way of knowing his question had probably dredged up painful memories for Charlotte.

Just forgiving him had been a monumental step. The last thing she’d ever consider was marrying him. If there was any doubt about that, her reaction had squashed it. She’d run away from them like she’d stumbled upon a toxic waste dump. She didn’t move that fast when she was riding her bike. “Remember she said she had work to do today.”

“You don’t think she’s mad at me, do you?”

“For what?”

“Saying she should marry you.”

“No.”

“Because I think it’s a good idea. I want a brother and she doesn’t have any kids. I don’t think she has any family at all. If she marries you, we can be her family. That way she won’t be all alone anymore.”

“Actually, she has a family.” Family that didn’t care a bit about her.

“Really? I never see them.”

“Yes.” A crappy father and two sisters who weren’t interested in her life or troubles. Still, they were her family. “But we’re getting off track. Charlotte and I aren’t getting married.”

“Why not? You like her, don’t you?”

“Yes.”

“She likes you, too.”

That was debatable. “It takes more than that.”

“What?”

“Love. The people have to be in love.”

“I know that.”

“Good. Then you know why Charlotte and I can’t get married.”

“Sure you can. All you have to do is make her fall in love with you.”

“And how do you propose I do that?”

Bobby crossed his arms across his narrow chest. “How am I supposed to know? I’m just a kid. Do you expect me to do everything? I asked her. Now you have to do the rest. You always tell me to make a plan and follow it so I don’t get waylaid. Now that’s what you should do.” With that decree, Bobby picked up the basketball and began practicing his free throws. No doubt being smoked by a woman had increased his determination to get better.

Rick supposed he should be honest with Bobby and tell him that even if Rick was the last man on earth, Charlotte would never agree to marry him. Not again. And that was all right with him. Truth be told, Rick wasn’t any more eager to get involved with someone than Charlotte was. His marriage to Sherry and subsequent divorce and heartbreak weren’t something he wanted to repeat. He was content with his life and didn’t see a reason to complicate it by adding a woman to the mix. Especially one he had a bad past with. No, it was best to leave well enough alone.
