They made Mountain Calf’s village in the afternoon of the fourth day. Their reception there was even warmer and more grand than the one in the other Nez Perce village. Barlow watched with a pleased expression as Mountain Calf greeted her friends and family, her smile fairly beaming across the land. It was almost enough to melt the snow on the surrounding hills.

A feast and dance were held in their honor, and the festivities went on until long into the night. But Barlow was still up early. After eating, he went to meet with Fat Lance and some of the other warriors in the civil chief’s lodge. Mountain Calf sat at his side, which perplexed the Nez Perce men.

“My grasp of your tongue is poor,” Barlow said in English, which Mountain Calf translated for him. “Mountain Calf will be my translator.”

The warriors talked among themselves for a few moments before Fat Lance nodded. “What can my people do for my white friend?” the civil chief asked.

“My friends and I need ponies. Plenty of ponies,” Barlow said in Nez Perce. He had told Mountain Calf this morning that he would try his hand at speaking her language, but she was to jump in at any time if what he was saying was coming out wrong.

“We have many ponies. Mules, too. From the Shoshonis.” Fat Lance smiled in joy.

“And my friend Fat Lance will be fair in his price for these ponies and mules, yes?” Barlow said, letting the Indian know he was not about to be taken. Rutledge had explained pretty much what he could expect to pay in trade for how many horses and mules.

Fat Lance nodded.

“Then let’s go look at your animals.”
