The splendor of the Rocky Mountains had to be seen for their breathtaking beauty to be appreciated. Peaks that towered over two miles above sea level, crystal-clear icy emerald lakes, jagged gorges and broad canyons, ravines that seemed bottomless, cliffs so sheer that not even mountain sheep could scale them. Timber everywhere, lushly forested slopes of broad pines and tall firs and quivering aspens. Streams and rivers that gurgled their swift way to the plains and beyond.
For Nate King, it was love at first sight. That first day he set foot in the Rockies, he loved the mountains as he had never loved anywhere in his life. They fit him like a perfectly tailored suit of clothes. They fit him as the streets and alleys of New York City never had. He had come, he had stayed, and he would not forsake the mountains this side of the grave.
Nate had never known that a person could fall so passionately in love with a chunk of real estate. The thick greenery of his native New York had been fine. He had whiled away many an hour on his uncleâs farm, enjoying the outdoors. But in his estimation, the verdant East could not begin to compare to the unmatched majesty of the West. The East was grand, but the West was more than grand. The West was paradise.
Everywhere there was wildlife. Nature in all her varied guises. Birds chirping gaily in the trees or fluttering on outstretched wings; sparrows, wrens, robins, jays, larks, warblers, bluebirds, woodpeckers, and others. There were deer and elk and buffaloâshaggy mountain buffalo, not their trimmer kin on the prairie far below. There were foxes and coyotes and wolves. There were bobcats and mountain lions and an occasional lynx. There were black bears in abundance and grizzlies in reduced numbers, but still far too many to make travel ever truly safe.
Above all, there was a raw vitality unique to the mountains. The pulse of life was stronger, more vibrant.
Nate thrived on the mountains as he never had on the dales and hills of the Appalachians. He had been to the desert Southwest and the mossy forestlands of the Pacific, but they did not stir him as the Rockies stirred him. They did not reach into the marrow of his being and fill him with a zest for being alive.
This latest trek east had been emotional torture. He did not like being gone so long. Months had passed since Nate last saw the high valley he had staked out as his own. A pristine sanctuary protected by stark peaks, with a jewel of a lake at its center.
Now, as Nate came to the crown of the last ridge and set eyes on his personal slice of heaven on earth, he smiled in heartfelt relief. They were home at long last. Truly home, where they belonged.
But no sooner had the thought flitted through Nateâs mind than reality crashed down with the weight of an avalanche. Because near the lake, in the vicinity of his cabin, smoke coiled into the air.
