Chapter Twenty-Seven

Louise

The back door opened and the sound of thudding feet and voices poured into the house. Louise pulled the covers up over her head. She should have used the time Polly and the children were out to draw up the rotas for the following week, but as no one else gave a toss about them, why should she? She’d get up and help Polly in a minute.

‘When you do a number two, does it go down the pipe and back out the tap?’ one of the children asked from the kitchen. Louise closed her eyes. Or she’d stay where she was.

After a few minutes their chatter moved out into the courtyard and the house was quiet again. Her phone beeped on her bedside table. She considered ignoring it. Nick wasn’t due to call the twins until later. But it might be from HR, asking when she’d be back at work. She honestly didn’t know. For the first time in her career, she had no enthusiasm for her job. Strange, given that telling people what to do was her hobby and being paid to do it was even better.

Sighing, she pulled the duvet down and looked at the phone. It was her daily horoscope. Venus and Neptune come together. This is a good time to let go and forgive others, she read. Forgive others? The astrologer was having a laugh. She’d never forgive her sister. If it wasn’t for her, she and Nick would still be together.

Louise sat up. Her head spun with the sudden movement combined with lack of food. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d gone any length of time without eating; she’d even managed to wolf down a ham sandwich during labour. She’d sneak into the kitchen while Polly and the children were outside so she didn’t have to speak to anyone.

Louise opened her bedroom door and caught sight of her reflection in the mirror behind the optics. Her hair was stuck to her head with grease and the jogging bottoms and baggy t-shirt she’d been wearing for days smelled like a school locker room. She really should shower and change, but what was the point? A bang came from the kitchen. She ducked back into her room, then realised what the noise was. It was the broken cupboard door. The housekeeping money was in that cupboard. Louise hurried along the passageway to the kitchen. Which one of the little sods was it? She hoped it was Jasmine. That’d teach Erica to judge her.

Wrenching the door open, Louise looked across to see the broken cupboard door hanging off its one remaining hinge. A figure knelt on the work surface, one hand in the housekeeping jar, the other holding a five-pound note. A strange gulping noise came from Louise’s throat and the girl turned. When she saw Louise, her small brown eyes widened and her cheeks turned crimson.

Heat surged up Louise’s chest and neck. ‘What the bloody hell do you think you’re doing?’

Tess’s bottom lip wobbled.

‘My room, now,’ Louise hissed.
