CHAPTER SIX
JANE
Waking up at Colinâs in the early hours of the next morning was, needless to say, awkward as hell. I mean, Iâm so confused right now. One minute we were arguing, the next, we were having the most intense sexual experience of my life.
First, there was the ninja level stealth required to quietly slip out from under Colinâs arm. Then, there was the walk of shame past the kitchen where his mother, father and Doc Avery were already up having breakfast.
âOh, Janey, would you like to have some breakfast before you go?â Mrs. Parks calls out. Because a woman leaving their house at 6:00 a.m., in the clothes she came in yesterday, is entirely normal apparently.
âNo, itâs fine, Mrs. Parks,â I say, darting for the door. âIâll pick something up on the way to work.â
âOkay dear,â I hear her voice in the retreating distance, âSee you later then.â
Later?
I didnât know how to respond to that one. So I didnât.
Iâm in my car in record time and on my way back home soon after. Thereâs plenty to reliveâand regretâin the long, leisurely hot shower I take when I get home. My skin tingles and reddens and this is caused not just by the waterâs temperature. I remember the way I called out to him, begged him. How I performed for him, and I place my hands on my burning cheeks.
Thing is, I donât even understand how it happened. Colin made my life hell for so long. I dry myself and wrap myself in my long, fuzzy pink robe. My first class is at 11:00 today, so I donât exactly need to rush and momentarily feel bad for the fib I told Mrs. Parks. But I certainly didnât want to face Colin again before I had a handle on whatever was going on here. But first, breakfast.
I go to the kitchen, thinking Iâll make it a big one. Iâm famished, a situation Iâm sure last nightâs activities contributed to. Of course, the doorbell rings. For a sec, I think to pretend that Iâm not home, but my car is parked outside. Besides, if itâs Colin, that would just be cowardly.
Imagine my surprise when I answer ⦠and itâs Jeter.
Mrs. Faulkner is at her door picking up her paper and is giving us a disapproving look.
âMorning, my beautiful rescuer,â he enters without being asked. His hands are full of bags. He looks around for a bit before finding the kitchen and making his way to it.
âUh ⦠Jeter ⦠hi.â I add hesitantly, not wanting to seem impolite. I wave to Mrs. Faulkner, who I see shaking her head just before the door closes. âWhat are you doing here?â
A better question is how did he know where I lived?
âIâve come to make you breakfast. Itâs tradition to make rescue breakfast where I come from.â
âReally?â
Europeans are so weird.
He looks at me, hazel eyes twinkling mischievously. âNo. I make a joke. But Americans believe anything we tell them. It makes for good laughs.â
I hope he isnât joking about making me breakfast though.
