Chapter 11.1
The air is alive with excitement. The Beast leaps faster and faster, enjoying the increased power from the first feast of human hearts since heâs come of age. Each of his leaping bounds is alive with new strength and wonder, tingling with anticipation. He vaults to the roof of the hospital and smiles with a sharp, pointy grin. He descends to the ledge of an open window with the gentle grace of a cat. The Beast sees the carnage his creatures have caused. He culls them to prevent their overzealous nature from damaging his prize. The Beast thinks, How is your might, sir? Three hearts full!

Screams fill the halls of the hospital. The creatures of the Beast frantically seek their masterâs prize, feasting on whoever stands in their way. No one survives. No new progeny are born from the carnage. Flesh and spirit are gobbled whole without care for the pleas of âNo! Please! Donât!â
The loudest screams emanate from Sharon. She went with the attending medical personnel when they wheeled Daniel to triage. She paced in the waiting area for word of his condition. Soon she hears a woman screaming in the triage room. She fears for Daniel. When she enters the room, there stands a blood-covered Danielâtaller, bigger, more monstrous though still looking more human than not, using a row of jagged teeth to rip the throat out of one of the attending physicians.
Sharon screams, âDaniel, no!â
He drops the doctor on the floor. He tries to speak but cannot find his voice. He looks down at the monstrous claws where his hands used to be. Daniel feels a painful screaming in his head calling him. He bolts out of the door, knocking Sharon to the floor as he runs down the hall.
The Beast is now able to glide with levitation. He floats through the halls with the confident swagger of a prince. No need to hurry. So many doorsâhis prize is so close he can taste her but is hidden like a single pearl in the belly of one of one thousand clams. Patience is the winner in this game.
His creatures drop their heads in submission as he walks by. He suddenly stops in front of the Daniel-creature, the only one of his creations not on all fours. He grabs Danielâs chin, studying his face and eyes. The Beast remembers this one. He realizes this creature was the first to be born after he reached his maturity.
The Beast speaks aloud, âYou may be useful.â He slowly releases one of the tentacles from his chest and uses his thumb to gently push his venom inside the jaw of the Daniel-creature.
Daniel can feel his last bit of humanity slipping away. His eyes fill with black. He can feel his skin thickening, growing harder.
The Beast watches with a smile as his new creature transitions. The top of each of Danielâs ears elongates, rises, and wraps over and down the back of his head, tapering at the base of his head like thin ramsâ horns.
