Chapter 10

I awoke to a hand pushing the hair away from my face. My eyes opened to find Hope with me, her eyes filled with tears as she looked me over. I turned, uncaring of my nudity as I sat up, wincing at the swollenness between my thighs and the cramps that assaulted my midsection.

“Are you okay?” I whispered through cracked lips.

“Are you?” she countered thickly as she hugged me. “They brought me in here last week, Laura. You’ve been sleeping for seven fucking days! Nothing they did would wake you, nothing. They brought in witches, and they couldn’t even sense you here, like you were somewhere else entirely. They said your soul was wrong, that it wasn’t even here anymore,” she sobbed against my shoulder. “I thought I lost you!”

“I’m fine,” I assured her, grabbing the blanket to shield myself, only to find I was covered in an oversized shirt that smelled like the mutt. “Are you well? Are you being fed?” I asked hurriedly.

“Yes, Moira is seeing to me and has made sure the men stay away. She’s rather sweet considering she’s my jailor,” she shrugged as I sat back, staring at her. “I have no magic.”

“I know. Braydon made a deal with Thea. You, your mother, and I have no magic, which means no one is coming to save you yet. We’ve been hexed, is my guess. I think that was why Thea was at the ball, that and she wanted payback for the death of her child. I don’t know how far it extends, only that if I was going to go out as she did, I’d hex every witch who I could.”

“Hexes have a loophole though, we just have to find it,” she said in a hushed tone.

Footsteps sounded through the front of the house. Her violet eyes swung toward the door as Braydon entered it, dripping sweat from his face and naked chest. His gaze searched mine, his knuckles tightening on the ax he held taking a step toward us.

“Do you intend to cut her up too, dog?” Hope sneered, standing as if she intended to defend me with her bare hands.

“No,” he growled hoarsely, staring at me through wintery blue eyes.

“Then get out. I believe Moira said she forbid you from hovering at Laura’s bed days ago.” She crossed her arms, giving him a glare that would melt the bones off a lesser man.

“She’s my mate,” he challenged.

“The fuck she is, mutt. She’s my aunt, and if she wanted you, she’d say so.” She turned, looking at me for direction.

“I don’t want him,” I croaked out, turning to look for water to wet the dryness of my mouth. “Water?” I whispered. He refused to leave, and when he stepped closer, she hissed and opened her mouth to scream while his eyes narrowed on her stubbornness.

“Moira!” Hope shouted toward the open door.

Moira entered with a raised brow, moving her eyes between Hope and Braydon before they settled on me. “You’re alive?” she asked, clapping her hands to the wolf that stood guard.
