80 Census 2001 & 2011.
81 From about 41% in 48% in all three constituencies while the average for London was 37%.
Despite these changes, the people of Lambeth continued to vote Labour and by larger majorities after 1997. By 2017, the three parliamentary constituencies had become safe Labour seats. From 1974 to 1987, Labour held Lambeth Central, Norwood and Vauxhall on votes ranging from 42% to 52%, while the Labour vote in Streatham increased from 34% to 39%.82 From 1992 to 2017, Labourâs hold on Norwood, Streatham and Vauxhall consolidated.83 In Dulwich and West Norwood, its vote fluctuated from 61% in 1997 to 70% in 2017, dipping to 45% in 2005 and 2010. In Streatham, it ranged from 63% to 68% in the same period, dipping to 43% in 2010. In Vauxhall, Labourâs hold weakened slightly, ranging from 64% in 1997 to only 57% in 2017, perhaps reflecting the more rapid reduction in council housing taking place in the gentrified areas close to the Thames.84 The borough council had by this time returned to being a Labour stronghold, with the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party now recording respectable votes, while the Conservatives have been relegated to a poor fourth position. In the local elections in 2010, Labour polled 43% increasing to 54% in 2018. In the Greater London Authority elections, Labour polled 53% in 2012. In the referendum on EEC membership Lambeth voted 78.6% to remain, although turnout was only 67.3%. Nobody could mistake that Lambeth in 2017 was a Labour-voting borough by a significant margin.
The Times journalist Matthew Parris highlighted the influence of gentrification in his report on the Vauxhall by-election in 1989. He described the way white professional households were spreading out from traditional strongholds, such as around Clapham Common, of which 16% consisted of single non-pensioners living in private rented accommodation.85 From the 1980s, cultural, ethnic and geographic differences started to play a more important role than social class in influencing political choice in Lambeth. By 2018, the Conservatives in Lambeth had been reduced to only 1 councillor, Labour had recovered to 57 from a low point of only 28 seats in 2002 after the defeat of the hard-left and the Liberal Democrats had been wiped out, for reasons to do primarily with their part in the Coalition government of 2010â2015.86 The Green Party started to make inroads winning a seat in 2014 and increasing this to 5 in 2018. Local party membership figures in Lambeth are not publicly available, although the national figures show some clear trends, which were more than likely repeated at a local level. The UK membership had reached over 400,000 in 1997 at the height of the popularity of New Labour, but had declined quite quickly to only 177,000 by 2007, probably reflecting disillusion with Blair after the decision to go to war in Iraq. It had only partly recovered to 187,000 in 2012. But after the election of Corbyn as a Labour leader in 2015, the figures increased dramatically to 564,000 in 2017.
