OAKWOOD N14

Piccadilly

Opened as ENFIELD WEST on 13 March 1933

Name changed to ENFIELD WEST (OAKWOOD) on 3 May 1934

Finally became simply OAKWOOD on 1 September 1946

The ‘oak wood’ referred to was once a part of Enfield Chase. The first syllable of ‘Enfield’ derives from the name of a Saxon landowner here – so ‘Enfield’ means ‘Eana’s clearing’.

Notting Hill in 1750 – very different from the scene of the Notting Hill festivals in the twenty-first century.

Notting Barn Farm in 1830, near today’s Notting Hill Gate underground station.
