“Like the wild creatures from which they evolved, men rely on senses, not emotions. Forget candlelight dinners and mood music. Men prefer visual stimuli, are unwilling to consume what they cannot see, and are unable to concentrate on amorous pursuits while their stomachs are empty. Mom was right, ladies. Food really is the first stop on the way to their hearts.”

Claire tapped the page with her fingertip. “Hmm…Well, at least we’re on the right track. If it’s one thing your daddy does appreciate, it’s a nicely prepared meal. I don’t know about the rest of this, though. It seems rather complex for something that’s supposed to come naturally.”

Forcing her mind into the same study mode that she’d used so successfully through the grind of medical school, Claire told herself that learning seduction techniques was no different from any other course of study. One simply gathered information, processed it efficiently, then put the knowledge to use.

Visual stimuli, for instance—impulses transmitted via optic nerves from the retina to the occipital lobe, where they were transformed into vision. That was something Claire could understand. Science, biology, anatomical facts.

Intellectually, she was also aware that the sight of the unclothed female form had a powerful physical effect on the male of the species. This reaction seemed to occur even if the female in question was available only on celluloid, or as a two-dimensional photograph in a glossy magazine.

That struck Claire as peculiar. After all, she’d seen her share of nude males. Although she could appreciate the beauty of a well-formed and muscular physique, she’d yet to be physically aroused by the mere sight of one.

Issuing a pained sigh, Claire propped an elbow on the counter, rested her forehead on her fist and used her free hand to turn the page.
